What does the Bible say about divorce?

God's ideal is lifelong marriage ('God hates divorce' - Malachi 2:16). Jesus permitted divorce for sexual immorality (Matthew 19:9), and Paul added abandonment by an unbeliever (1 Corinthians 7:15). While divorce isn't unforgivable, God calls believers to reconciliation when possible.

Key Scripture

Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives... whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.

- Matthew 19:8-9
