Comparison

TheoScriptura vs Logos: which Bible study tool is right for you

Logos is a serious research library: more than 250,000 digital books available, interlinears in every plan, and Greek and Hebrew tools for anyone who wants to work with the original text. TheoScriptura does far less. It is for the reader who wants to ask what a passage means and get an answer grounded in the commentaries, without building a library first. Here is where each one is the better choice.

Where Logos is the better choice

  • You read Greek or Hebrew, or are learning to. Every Logos plan includes interlinear tools, and any word opens a word study guide or lexicon entry. TheoScriptura has none of these.
  • You want a large, permanent library of commentaries and reference works that you choose yourself.
  • You preach or teach weekly and want tools built for sermon preparation.
  • You want a desktop program as well as web and mobile apps.

Where TheoScriptura is the better choice

  • You want to start studying today without paying for or assembling a library. The core is free, including asking questions.
  • You want an answer to a plain question, with the verses and theologians it rests on, more than a set of tools to research it yourself.
  • You want to see how different Christian traditions read a passage and why they differ, set out side by side in the answer.
  • You lead a small group and want reading plans and a daily discussion thread where the group's questions get answered.

Questions people ask

Is TheoScriptura a cheaper Logos?

No, and it would be unfair to Logos to say so. Logos is a research library with original-language tools; TheoScriptura has no interlinear, no lexicons and no library to build. What TheoScriptura does is answer questions about Scripture from a fixed body of commentaries, free at its core.

Does TheoScriptura have Greek and Hebrew tools?

No. There is no interlinear and no word study tool, and side-by-side translation comparison is still planned. If you need to work in the original languages, Logos is the better choice.

Logos has an AI assistant too. How is TheoScriptura's different?

Logos describes its Study Assistant as giving "cited answers from an AI Bible tool drawn from books you trust." TheoScriptura answers from Scripture and a fixed set of commentaries and theologians, cites the verses and theologians it used, and explains where traditions disagree. It is free to try: 5 questions a day without an account, 10 with a free account.

Who should use both?

A pastor or teacher who prepares in Logos may still find TheoScriptura useful for a quick question, or for a study group that does not own Logos. A reader who has never used study software will usually find TheoScriptura easier to start with.

What does TheoScriptura cost?

The core is free: 8 Bible translations, reading plans, notes, joining study groups, and 5 questions a day without an account, 10 with a free account. Plus is an optional subscription that raises the daily limit to 20 and adds 15 Deep Study sessions a month. A Scholar tier is listed as coming soon.
