What is Advent?
The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival.” For nearly two millennia, Christians have observed Advent as a season of preparation and anticipation before Christmas. Traditionally beginning on the fourth Sunday before December 25th, Advent invites us to pause from the rush of the holiday season and prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ's birth.
The early church established Advent as a time of fasting and reflection, similar to Lent before Easter. By the 6th century, it had evolved into its current form—a period marked by hope, peace, joy, and love, often symbolized by the four candles of the Advent wreath. The liturgical colors of purple (representing royalty and penitence) and blue (symbolizing hope) remind us that we await not just a historical event, but the promised return of our King.
Our 25-Day Journey follows the narrative arc of salvation history, from Creation through the prophets to the manger in Bethlehem. Each day features carefully selected Scripture passages, masterpiece artwork from artists like Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and Fra Angelico, and guided reflections to help you encounter the Christmas story with fresh eyes.
Whether you're exploring Advent for the first time or returning to deepen a familiar tradition, this journey invites you to slow down, wonder, and rediscover why this baby in a manger changed everything. May these 25 days kindle anticipation in your heart and draw you closer to the One whose coming we celebrate.
