TheoScriptura vs YouVersion: which Bible app for deeper study

YouVersion's Bible App is free, enormous and very good at what it sets out to do: put the Bible, in your language, on your phone, with plans and audio to keep you reading. TheoScriptura is for the moment after reading, when a verse raises a question and you want to know what the commentaries say. Many people will want both. Here is where each one is the better choice.

Where YouVersion is the better choice

  • You want the translation you already know. YouVersion carries the NIV, ESV and NLT; TheoScriptura cannot offer copyrighted translations.
  • You read in a language other than English, Spanish or Hindi. YouVersion lists 2,300 languages.
  • You want a free app with no upsell at all. YouVersion says: "No ads. No upsells."
  • You want thousands of devotional reading plans to choose from, and to do them with friends.
  • You want a mature phone app with audio Bibles and offline reading.

Where TheoScriptura is the better choice

  • You finish a chapter with a question, not just a highlight. Ask it, and the answer shows which verses and which theologians it rests on, so you can check it.
  • You want to know how Reformed, Catholic, Orthodox or Wesleyan readers take a passage, and why they differ, instead of a single devotional reading.
  • You lead a study group and want the group's questions answered inside the discussion for that day's reading.
  • You want more than a short answer. Plus adds 15 Deep Study sessions a month: a study guide with a teaching outline and discussion questions.

Questions people ask

Is TheoScriptura a replacement for YouVersion?

Not for most people. YouVersion is the better place to read every day: it is free, has thousands of plans and carries the translations most churches use. TheoScriptura is where you go when a passage raises a question, because it answers with the verses and commentaries behind the answer. Using both is reasonable.

Does TheoScriptura have the NIV or ESV?

No. TheoScriptura offers 8 Bible translations: LSV, BSB, WEB, ASV, YLT, KJV, RV1909, and HHBD. Copyrighted translations such as ESV, NIV, NASB, NLT, and NKJV are not available. If you need one of those, YouVersion has them.

Are both apps free?

YouVersion is entirely free with no ads or purchases. TheoScriptura's core study is free (5 questions a day without an account, 10 with a free account), and Plus is an optional subscription that raises the daily limit to 20 and adds 15 Deep Study sessions a month.

Where do TheoScriptura's answers come from?

From Scripture and from a fixed body of theological writing, including commentaries by Matthew Henry, John Calvin and John Wesley. Each answer lists the Bible references and theologians it cites, so you can read the sources yourself rather than take the answer on trust.

Can I read with a group on either app?

Yes. YouVersion lets you invite friends into a Plan. TheoScriptura study groups read a plan together with a discussion thread for each day. Anyone can join a study group for free; Plus members can start up to 3.
