His decree moved millions. None of this concerned the emperor personally. He issued the order and moved on to other matters. He could not know that his administrative decision served a purpose older than Rome itself. Seven hundred years earlier, Micah had written that the ruler of Israel would come from Bethlehem. The Messiah had to be born in David's city. But Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth. Under normal circumstances, their child would be born in the north. How would ancient prophecy be fulfilled? Luke claimed his story happened in real space and time. The birth he would describe was not myth. It was event. The Pax Romana, the Roman peace, made travel safer than it had been in generations. Roads connected the empire. The conditions that allowed a pregnant woman to travel from Galilee to Judea also allowed the gospel to spread across the Mediterranean within a generation. Caesar's peace served Christ's kingdom. Roman roads would carry Christian missionaries. Bethlehem was a small town. Major roads bypassed it. When thousands returned to ancestral homes for the census, local resources were overwhelmed. The city of David. That phrase echoes through Scripture. David kept sheep on these hills as a boy. Samuel anointed him here. Micah promised the ruler would emerge from this place. And now the legal descendant of David arrived with his pregnant wife, fulfilling prophecy neither of them had deliberately sought. A census issued for taxation purposes. These are not obstacles to God's plan. They are instruments of God's plan. Caesar thought he was counting subjects. You think you are responding to life's demands. God is positioning you for His purposes. This Advent, trust the providence in your circumstances. The road to Bethlehem was long and uncomfortable. It led to the manger. Your difficult journey leads somewhere too. The census of your life serves the kingdom you do not fully see. Tomorrow we arrive at a stable where no room remains except in a manger.
