The lot fell to him. Among all the priests serving that week, Zechariah alone was chosen to enter the Holy Place and burn incense on the golden altar. In a lifetime of priestly service, this moment would come only once. He entered alone. The crowd gathered outside, praying while the incense rose. Through the heavy veil, into sacred space where the golden lampstand flickered, Zechariah walked with his censer of burning coals. Then he was not alone. An angel stood at the right side of the altar. Not a gentle cherub. A being of terrifying presence. Fear fell upon him like a weight. "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard." What prayer? He and Elizabeth had never conceived. Their barrenness had become settled grief, an ache so familiar it seemed part of who they were. They had stopped asking. But heaven had not forgotten. "Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. He will be great before the Lord."
