Grace in the Bible is the unmerited favor of God—His love extended to sinful humanity as a free gift rather than something earned by works. The grace of God is central to the gospel: Ephesians 2:8 declares that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our own doing. This means salvation is entirely God's grace alone (sola gratia), a concept the Reformers emphasized as foundational to Christianity. God's grace operates through the means of grace—Scripture, prayer, sacraments, and the community of believers. The Apostle Paul wrote extensively about grace and mercy, teaching that where sin increased, grace abounded all the more (Romans 5:20). Understanding what grace means transforms the Christian life from striving to resting in the finished work of Christ.
