SufferingBible questions & Scripture-grounded answers

3 questions · Pain, trials, and God's purposes

Why does God allow suffering? This question has troubled believers since Job sat in ashes scraping his wounds. It is not merely academic. When pain touches your life or the life of someone you love, you want answers.

Scripture does not offer simplistic explanations. It offers something better: presence. God does not stand aloof from human suffering. In Christ, He entered it. Jesus wept at Lazarus' tomb. He sweat drops of blood in Gethsemane. He cried out on the cross. God knows suffering from the inside.

The Bible acknowledges that suffering is real and terrible. It does not minimize your pain or offer hollow platitudes. Yet it insists that God is good, that He is sovereign, and that He works "all things together for good" for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Holding these truths together requires faith.

Suffering can destroy faith. It can also deepen it. Many Christians testify that their darkest seasons brought them closest to God. Paul spoke of sharing in Christ's sufferings as a means of knowing Him more deeply (Philippians 3:10).

The questions below explore what Scripture says about pain, evil, and God's purposes. They will not remove your questions, but they may bring comfort and clarity. You do not suffer alone. God is with you.
